United for Ukraine and BRYTER Connect Displaced People with Lawyers

BRYTER and United for Ukraine

United for Ukraine (UfU), an NGO, inter alia, providing information and assistance for temporarily displaced people by the war in Ukraine, and BRYTER, the no-code automation platform, have teamed up to provide fast and accurate services to refugees. These efforts are supported by the International Rescue Committee and a Google.org Fellowship.

Helping displaced people access crucial information

More than 14 million people have fled their homes since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The UN Refugee Agency says that as of May 27, 6.7 million refugees have left Ukraine for neighboring countries, while eight million people are displaced inside the war-torn country itself. The demand for informed decisions, safe housing, humanitarian support, and legal advice has been rising day by day.

“To provide Ukrainians with legal aid, we were able to obtain support from 200 lawyers just by the third day of the Russian war against Ukraine. Now, we are cooperating with international law firms, boutique law firms, refugee law clinics, and NGOs from Europe, the USA, Canada, Latin America and Asia, to provide information regarding immigration, education, healthcare, employment, and more, and process individual requests,” says Polina Lehman, founding member of the United for Ukraine Association and Legal Aid Lead.

Providing technological support

UfU’s partnership with BRYTER provides UfU’s legal team with the necessary tools to build digital applications. A total 4 000+ individual requests for 21 countries have been processed since February 2022 via UfU’s Emergency Relief platform www.unitedforukraine.org

The greatest challenge for the UfU has become responding to the high volume of requests while taking into account the geographical scope, the workloads and law specializations of legal advisors. While many questions can be answered by carefully analysed and prepared Frequently Asked Questions sections, individual requests are still being addressed through the platform. The number of daily requests for individual legal assistance ranges from 5 to 100 requests per day, pertaining to personal issues and support for businesses and startups.

At United for Ukraine, it was clear that we needed a technology-based solution to elevate the management and efficiency of this workstream. BRYTER has an outstanding reputation and I was very pleased when Micha-Mauel Bues, co-founder of BRYTER, offered support. With BRYTER, we could design a solid tool to process increasing amounts of requests and manage workflows with our legal partners on a completely different level.

Olga Hamama, co-founder of UfU

BRYTER offers a no-code service automation platform to easily build digital solutions and automate complex services. Adapting BRYTER technology enabled UfU to provide a high quality case flow and management tool that enables Pro Bono partners to access pending matters based on their location and expertise. UfU’s team receives a profound overview of processes and can react accordingly, easily following growing demands and developments and adopting the offering based on the clients’ needs.

“We’re committed to supporting the right to legal access, and it has been incredibly rewarding to partner with the United for Ukraine Association to create a tool to help the victims of this war and support displaced people in their struggle for freedom,” Jakub Makowski (Manager of the BRYTER Open Program), says.

About Google.org

Google.org connects nonprofit innovators with Google resources to solve complex human challenges, and ensure that everyone can participate in the digital economy. The same technology that makes our lives easier every day can also help solve some of the world’s largest problems.  That’s why we’re applying advanced technology to some of our greatest challenges, like using artificial intelligence to help predict natural disasters. Everyone should be able to participate in the digital economy, so we’re providing digital skills training for job seekers, supporting online safety and media literacy, and investing in computer science education for students — particularly in underrepresented communities. We know that the best answers often come from those closest to the problem. That’s why we join forces with nonprofit innovators, committing Google volunteers, technology, and over $200 million in grants every year to help scale their impact.
