Norton Rose Fulbright: Innovating like a start-up as a global law firm

Norton Rose Fulbright

Norton Rose Fulbright is a leading global law firm with 3700+ lawyers and offices all around the world.

The firm innovates for clients by constantly seeking opportunities for efficiency and keeping users close to the product development process. This is also how Bernhard Fiedler, Partner, and his award-winning team used the no-code automation platform BRYTER to create a tool that identifies new local laws that are relevant to international clients that operate across many jurisdictions.

Maximum efficiency

For Bernhard, efficiency is paramount: “I hate doing things twice. Every time I see some sort of a pattern, I try to think about how I can do it more efficiently. And this is where the innovation process starts,” he explains. “Furthermore, my understanding of my role as a lawyer is that I’m there to advise clients on risks and to make transactions happen. I’m not there to change plurals to singulars in a document.”

This understanding has carried over into a suite of innovations for Norton Rose Fulbright’s clients. The firm was an early adopter of document automation and helps clients maintain agility by creating products that use workflow automation to improve their legal operations and data management.

Their new tool is built on the same principle of removing repetitive and inefficient tasks. Complying with local laws is a pain point for customers with an international presence due to the difficulty lawyers experience understanding laws outside of their home jurisdictions. This is a challenge that Bernhard’s team hopes to resolve with an automated tool that identifies and filters only the relevant changes in laws for each jurisdiction.

“Currently, you need to have somebody for each jurisdiction, more or less constantly monitoring whether they are changes in the law in the jurisprudence that might affect you in any way, and where you might need to adapt your business,” Bernhard explains. “What we are doing is structuring information, figuring out what the change is, whether it is relevant to the client, and whether there is an imminent threat. That’s where we are actually creating value.”

This tool is built with BRYTER no-code app builder in response to frequent requests in this area. It’s relevant for every one of Norton Rose Fulbright’s clients with international operations and is presented as a customized feed that can be used at a glance.

Conceptualizing and building self-service apps like this has become easier for the firm over time, especially with the help of BRYTER’s easy to use interface, which any lawyer can build on without any coding knowledge.
